Girl HQ

Meet the founders

Girl Undiscovered was founded by three New Zealand girls with oceans of experience spanning business, creativity, feminism, photography and skincare.

Girls, discovering.

How it all began

They packed their bags and travelled to explore the time-honoured traditions that bestow the feeling of beauty in New Zealand and cultures abroad. On these voyages of discovery, they sought the best natural sources of skincare.

Our founders met incredible women who welcomed them into their communities to experience their way of life. They learnt what beauty means to these women as they were taught the practices that had been passed down through the generations.

These women and their families have become both friends and valued partners. Whether growing honey on a windswept island in New Zealand, coconuts in a remote village in Bali or harvesting thanaka in their own backyards in Myanmar, these are strong and passionate women and family collectives that are honouring the past and creating a future for their children.

Girl Undiscovered Offices

Girl Undiscovered’s HQ is located in Auckland, New Zealand. We also have a satellite office in Los Angeles and it is safe to say at least one Girl is somewhere in transit at any given time!

Charlotte Devereux

When I think about my inner girl, I go straight to what’s in my heart. The Free Me and the Natural Me. A few months ago, I spent a few nights on our family boat with no mirrors, no makeup...just me, the salt and the sea. It was very liberating.

My inspiration for Girl Undiscovered comes from my own family history, dating back to my grandmother. She, herself, was a wonderful business women and she inspired my mother to create one of the first natural skin care companies in New Zealand, Les Floralies…and my mother in turn inspired me to strive to do something that I was passionate about. When I first started creating products, I remember mixing Honey, Thanaka and the Coconut oil…and the smell was just so evocative! I had an instant flashback to my mother mixing various blends of oils in the kitchen, and I can literally smell the fragrance just talking about it…so beautiful and calming.

As the Product Developer at Girl Undiscovered, I’m in my happiest place creating incredible formula’s and I get great joy out of making products that people fall in love with and can use in their daily ritual. When I was creating the body scrub, I worked for over two years to achieve the ultimate blend. Sometimes that’s how long it takes, and I’m excited to say that it’s up for so many beauty awards this year, including Allure Best of Beauty Award and Fashion Quarterly NZ 2019 Best of Beauty Awards.

I always look to source ingredients that are natural but with strong scientific backing, and the most amazing one I have come across and incorporate into all of our products is Thanaka, from Myanmar (Burma). It has been used for 2000 years on women there and is wonderful for all skin types as it naturally brightens and is dense in antioxidants and rich in Vitamin C and E. It is literally a powerhouse ingredient and I am keen to educate the world on its magical powers! Watch this space!

Skin Story

As a 23-year-old spirit locked into the body of a 48-year-old, my skin issues are more about looking tired. For an instant lift, I pop on a bright lipstick!

I always start my day with our Crystal Cleansing Water, and I love how it makes my skin feel! I follow this with our Face Oil - a good tip is to place a few drops into your palms, rub gently and place your hands over your nose and mouth for a gentle aromatherapy before applying. The natural fragrance of the bergamot is very uplifting! I always have my beauty balm on hand. It’s multi-functional and you can use it on your lips, cuticles, under eyes, cheekbones and unruly brows. Anywhere that needs a bit of extra loving! The Face Mask is probably my favorite product overall, and I see quite a difference each time I use it . My skin literally goes from lackluster to soft and radiant in one use!

I feel so blessed to be able to use my own skin story to inspire the products that I help to create.

Sara Orme

I’m a free spirit who  permanently feels 20. I actually forget that I am over 50. I love that I can tap into my girl  spirit at any time. I also love that I can bring my life story, creative skills, feminist studies and photography into Girl Undiscovered.

I started my life with parents who taught me the power of creative thinking outside the box. Feminist, cultural and environmental protest marches in the 70’s was norm for me and is something I am still passionate about.

I was half way through my degree in Sociology and Art History when my life quite literally turned upside down. I’ve never looked back as it has been quite an incredible journey and one that has taught me to never be shy of hard work.

With a baby in one hand, a degree to complete and a part time job I didn’t get much time to remember my girl spirit. Two children and two grandchildren later, I can find her more than ever. I strangely feel younger now than I have for the last 30 plus years. I think I will feel like this forever.

Philippa (Philly) Gebbie

I’m Philly. I was born and bred in New Zealand but I have lived all over the world for most of my life.

I have always been a free spirit. I’ve always just done what I wanted to do and I’ve never listened to social convention. I have always literally said ‘okay I’m going to do this’ and done it.

I love the freedom of going somewhere and just fitting into that society and getting to know what it’s like. And maybe being a slightly different person at all the places I live because of how different each place is. I’ll be on plane with a one way ticket with no fear at all. The unknown is always exciting.

My girl within is thirty-three. I think if I look back to that time, I was really comfortable in myself. I’d gotten to that point where I was picking and choosing who I wanted to spend time with realising that time is more valuable than perhaps you do in your twenties. I also felt that I was in really good shape in terms of my health and my energy levels and my ability to just zoom around and be crazy and have fun. It was a time of total freedom. No responsibility.
